Gyokuro Premium

Gyokuro Tea is considered to be the highest grade of Japanese tea, and is actually put into a category of itself, not to be judged in contests along with other Japanese teas.  The name Gyokuro means “Jade dew”, and is not only farmed differently than Sencha, but prepared and served differently than other Japanese teas.

Premium grade Gyokuro Tea

Our Premium grade Gyokuro, could be considered to be an every day tea, if you consider a 4 star hotel an “every day hotel”.  While maintaining the deep sweetness and mellowness, the body is slightly lighter than of the Pinnacle or Super Premium grade Gyokuro tea that we offer.  Don’t be fooled by the grade though.  This is the light weight champion of Gyokuro, and it packs a punch that lasts all the way through the 3rd infusion.

Sweet Mellowness of Gyokuro

This could be considered an every day tea for those who like the sweet mellowness of Gyokuro, but are not satisfied with the average Gyokuro that you will find in most tea shops.  Highly recommended for drinking with friends and family, and a great introductory Gyokuro for those who are developing a taste for green tea.

Gyokuro Tea for every day Drinking

Our Superior Gyokuro is a great tea for every day drinking.  It is also great as an introductory Gyokuro for those just discovering Japanese tea, and for those who want to see if Gyokuro and Sencha are really that different.  Light body, yet has the full mellowness of Gyokuro, no hint of grassiness associated with Sencha, and a nice after note of sweetness that should bring a smile to your lips.

Gyokuro Super Premium

Gyokuro Tea is considered to be the highest grade of Japanese tea, and is actually put into a category of itself, not to be judged in contests along with other Japanese teas.  The name Gyokuro means “Jewel dew”, and is not only farmed differently than Sencha, but prepared and served differently than other Japanese teas.

Our Super Premium grade Gyokuro, although labeled by us as one grade below the pinnacle grade Gyokuro, would be considered Pinnacle grade by anyone else.  In fact, fans of the Super Premium argue that this is actually a superior Gyokuro to the Pinnacle Gyokuro.   Truth be told, this is indeed one of the top teas that Uji has to offer, and is a different kind of magic than our Pinnacle grade Gyokuro.  The tealeaves are hand picked, the color is a bright shade of jade, and the sweet, mellow, and full body.  The burst of flavor from just a single sip is truly addicting.  This tea is limited in production, and is exclusive to Uji.

Although maybe not an everyday tea, this is a Gyokuro that you will simply fall in love with.  Highly recommended as a special treat to yourself or to someone special, or for serving to special guests that you would like to impress.

Matcha Super Premium

Uji, Kyoto is known for the absolute highest grade Matcha in Japan, and no other region can even come close to claiming that they produce a Matcha that rivals even a middle grade Matcha from Uji.  The art of growing Matcha was developed here in Uji, and is the closest kept secret around.

Thick Green Tea Matcha Koi-cha

Our super premium grade Matcha is a Koi-cha (thick tea) that is commonly used for traditional tea ceremony.  This tea is full of flavor, smooth, rich, and naturally sweet.  You can use extra large heaps of this tea without causing the tea to go bitter.

Cheaper High grade Matcha

This is by far the most affordable of our Koi-cha, and is actually cheaper than most Matcha of the same grade and quality.  Often, you will find similar blends of the same grade of Matcha sold as the “highest grade Matcha available”, even in Japan.  While this is partially true, considering that Koi-cha is the highest grade of Matcha available, the truth of the matter is that it is rare that Matcha of higher quality ever reaches the “public market”, especially online.  This is not to say that this blend is not recommended, far from it!  This is an absolutely excellent Matcha that we are proud to be able to offer.

Farmers Blend Premium

The process of making Sencha is a 5-step process,

  1. Steaming
  2. Cooling while Drying
  3. Shaping
  4. Sorting leaves and stems, and
  5. Drying

The “Farmers blend”, otherwise known as Sobokucha (simple tea) and/or Aracha (or rough tea), skips step 4 and 5, and is what many of the tea farmers drink.  Why do tea farmers drink Sobokucha?  The reason is simple.  This is as far as a tea will be processed before the tea blenders blend it, and is the only way you will know the full potential of the leaf.  So, how does a farmer enjoy the tea leaves that he made?  Sobokucha is the answer.

Japanese tea for tea farmers

Sobokucha is a bold tea.  It includes both the stem and the leaf, has down to earth natural flavor, and is quite different compared to anything else out there.

This tea is very casual, and is favored by those who like the simplicity and the bold harmony that Sobokucha offers.  Perfect for everyday drinking, and is often favorited by die hard tea lovers.

Genmaicha with Gyokuro Superior

Genmaicha, sometimes known as “popcorn tea” is a blend between green tea and roasted and popped rice.  It is a perfect breakfast tea, and is often favored for later in the evening because of its mellow, yet toasty flavor.

Our Genmaicha with Gyokuro brings a unique quality to Genmaicha, which is usually based off of Sencha.  The Gyokuro added to the mix brings the sweetness into the picture, enhancing the aroma and flavor of the roasted grains.  This tea is full flavored with a wonderful aroma, and is as smooth as silk.

Genmaicha & Gyokuro Japanese Tea Blend

Traditionally, Genmaicha was considered to be a “poor man’s tea”.  The puffed rice was used as a “filler” to keep the price down.  Often made with nibancha or sanbancha (2nd and 3rd harvest teas), it is still considered by many to be a “cheap tea”.  However, all Genmaicha’s at Matabay are made from first flush tea leaves, which add a splendid freshness to the mix, and is a favorite amongst those who love Gemnaicha for its flavor and aroma.
